ALL OTHER NIGHTS  by Dara Horn

Book Discussion Guide

How is tonight different from all other nights? For Jacob Rappaport, a Jewish soldier in the Union army during the Civil War, it is a question his commanders have already answered for him — on Passover, 1862, he is ordered to murder his own uncle in New Orleans, who is plotting to assassinate President Lincoln.

After this harrowing mission, Jacob is recruited to pursue another enemy agent, the daughter of a Virginia family friend. But this time, his assignment isn’t to murder the spy, but to marry her. Their marriage, with its riveting and horrifying consequences, reveals the deep divisions that still haunt American life today.

JANUARY SELECTION:

The Betrayal: The Lost Life of Jesus (A Novel)

by Kathleen O’Neal Gear & W. Michael Gear

There is an alternate story of the life of Jesus. One the early Church fathers found so menacing they outlawed the books that documented it, ordered them burned, and threatened anyone found copying them with death.

4th-century Biblical scholar Barnabas flees for his life while protecting these ancient holy texts that reveal Christ’s more radical and heretical side.

International bestselling Wyoming authors and award-winning archaeologists Kathleen O’Neal Gear and W. Michael Gear put more than 30 years of exhaustive research into this fascinating novel.

Are you reading Olive Kitteridge?olive-kitteridge-2

The 2009 Pulitizer Prize for Fiction was awarded to “Olive Kitteridge,” by Elizabeth Strout.

“This collection of 13 short stories set in small-town Maine packs a cumulative emotional wallop, bound together by polished prose and by Olive, the title character, blunt, flawed and fascinating.”–The Pulitzer Prizes, Columbia University

Lincoln County has chosen Olive Kitteridge for the 2009 “One Book, One Community” event.

“One Book, One Community” encourages Lincoln County residents to read and discuss the same book during the fall of 2009. Free paperback copies are available at the Thayne Branch Library and an audiobook version is available for check-out.

Thayne Branch Library will hold their community discussion on Monday, November 9 at 6:30pm in the Thayne Library.  Hope to see you there!

Letters from Yellowstone by Diane Smith

In the spring of 1898, a spirited young woman with a love for botany is invited to join a field study in Yellowstone National Park.

The study’s leader assumes she is a man, and is less than pleased to discover the truth. Once the scientists overcome the shock of having a woman on their team, they forge ahead on a summer of adventure, forming an enlightening web of relationships as they move from Mammoth Hot Springs to a camp high in the backcountry.

But as they make their way collecting amid Yellowstone’s beauty the group is splintered by differing views on science, nature, and economics.

Endowment logo                         …the Endowment Fund Challenge

To date, the Lincoln County Library Endowment Fund has received $31,253 in donations and $62,367 in matching dollars from the state .  Because of your generosity, we have made great progress in our first year of fundraising for the endowment…but we have a ways to go.  We are eligible to receive 2:1 matching dollars on donations up to $147,826.  Our goal is to take full advantage of this unprecedented opportunity to receive two dollars for every dollar donated.    Thank you & best wishes for 2010!          Updated 01/05/10
The 2008 Wyoming State Legislature set aside $9.1 million in matching funds to encourage establishment and growth of library endowments.  Lincoln County libraries are eligible to receive a 2:1 match on donations up to $147,826.  Every dollar donated, up to that amount, will be matched by the state with an additional two dollars.
When libraries statewide have raised $2.3 million cumulatively, each of the state’s 23 county library systems will receive an additional $100,000.  At the end of the fundraising period, June 30, 2013, we could have an endowment of over $550,000.
Tax deductible contributions may be made online by clicking on the “Foundation” tab at the top of the page or by mailing your check to Lincoln County Library Foundation (LCLF) Endowment Fund, 519 Emerald Street, Kemmerer, WY 83101.

Picturing America Banner

Thayne Branch Library is the proud recipient of The National Endowment for the Humanities’ (NEH) new Picturing America initiative. Picturing America provides an innovative way for citizens of all ages to explore the history and character of America through some of our nation’s great works of art.

As one of the over 56,000 schools and public libraries nationwide to receive the program, we now have access to this high quality, free resource that we are using to engage our patrons with discussions of our nation’s art, history, civics, literature, and more!

The images of people, places, and events illustrating American history give our patrons a chance to better understand our country’s past and its ideals. What better way to see the courage of a great leader than through Emanuel Leutze’s Washington Crossing the Delaware?

How better to appreciate the power of American democracy than through Norman Rockwell’s Freedom of Speech?

These masterpieces are opening our community members’ eyes to America’s rich history and culture while also providing an introduction to the broader world of the humanities.

For more information on the program, you can visit the Picturing America Web site at: www.PicturingAmerica.neh.gov. Feel free to peruse the site, and check out the images and the great links included. Sit down with your kids and start conversations about the beautiful masterpieces!

Picturing America is distributed by the NEH in cooperation with the American Library Association (ALA).
